Upper endoscopy, or EGD, is a direct visual examination of the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (the duodenum) using a thin, flexible endoscope. If needed, biopsies can be easily obtained through the scope to aid in the diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal disorders. Dilatation of strictures, placement of stents, and a variety of therapeutic maneuvers to stop bleeding can all be employed though the endoscope.
